California's invasive Aedes aegypti were found homozygous for the V1016I knockdown-resistance mutation. A separate study bred mosquitoes that ignore transfluthrin vapor and found that insensitive strain carried a higher frequency of that same V1016I mutation. Another measured a 48-fold resistance ratio for metofluthrin repellency in a resistant strain. Metofluthrin and transfluthrin are the active ingredients in every plug-in patio repeller on the market.
That is the mechanism behind every California one-star review that says "mosquitoes flew right through the vapor." They are not wrong and they are not unlucky.
Being fair to the science: the literature is genuinely mixed. At least one study found pyrethroids kept their repellent effect on knockdown-resistant populations, and the emanator trials that produced the great indoor numbers were run against a resistant population too. So this is not "vapor repellents are useless." It is "the effect is unreliable exactly where you live, and the failure reports have a documented mechanism behind them."
So the ranking below is built around it: the things that cannot be resisted come first. A sticky trap, a suction fan, moving air, and a screen do not care what mutation she carries. Chemistry does.
Black bucket, water, a handful of hay steeped a few days. To a pregnant female that smells like the perfect nursery. She flies in to lay, a sticky panel in the neck catches her, and a fine screen seals the trap so anything that does develop inside dies in there instead of flying out.
It kills the egg-laying females specifically. That is the exact half of the population biting you and making the next generation.
That is the CDC's Puerto Rico deployment. Female captures fell 53 percent in one trap type and 70 percent in another. When chikungunya swept through, 26.1 percent of residents were infected in AGO neighborhoods versus 43.8 percent without.
Read it honestly: those numbers are whole neighborhoods, professionally serviced every eight weeks. Two traps in one yard will not give you 80 percent. What they will do is kill pregnant females on your property continuously for a one-time cost, which nothing else here does.
The viral bucket recipe going around is tuned for the wrong mosquito. The heavy grass-slurry version is a Culex recipe, for the dusk mosquito that likes dank water. Aedes prefers CLEAN water in a container. For our ankle-biter: water, one or two leaves at most, and a quarter dunk at most. That is it. If you have both problems, run two buckets, one clean and one murky.
The diagnostic nobody knows: a working Bti bucket always has larvae swimming in it. That is not failure, Bti is not a knockdown poison. Look for pupae. Pupae mean something is about to fly out. Larvae mean it is working.
Three more failure modes people hit: add the dunk on day one, never later (otherwise you ran a breeding site for a week). Put it in shade, because Bti degrades in UV and the water evaporates. And put an angled stick in it so lizards and small animals can climb out.
Start in March, not July. People who ran both years say the same thing: starting in July barely moved anything, starting in April made a big difference. For San Diego that means late February to early March, before the first generation. Official messaging ramps up in May, which is already late.
Two entomologists and a mosquito-district employee argue on the record that a plain Bti bucket is net negative: unless there is no other breeding site within 1,000 feet, all you have done is attract adult females to your yard, and while their eggs are doomed, that female keeps taking blood meals from you the whole time.
They have a point, and the fix is in the design. That objection is against a bucket alone. A real AGO trap does not just kill the eggs, it catches the mother on an adhesive panel. That is the whole difference, and it is why the CDC design has a sticky card and a plain bucket does not. So do not run a bare Bti bucket as your only tool. Either buy the real thing, or pair a homemade sink with a gravid trap that kills the female.
The design is published (19-liter black pail, 12.8 cm entrance, adhesive surface, screen barrier). People do build them and they do catch mosquitoes. But the best-documented DIY build needed a Dremel, hardware cloth and silicone, and the builder's internal screen came loose and quietly turned it back into an ordinary bucket. There is no peer-reviewed data on homemade versions. Build it if you like building. Buy it if you want the result.
An In2Care station flips it around: instead of killing her, it dusts her legs with a growth regulator and a fungus and lets her fly off and larvicide every hidden nursery in the neighborhood before it kills her. Field-validated in Hawai'i, Florida and Australia. Mostly sold through vector control districts, so call the county and ask.
Buy two, not one. UC IPM is explicit that homeowner trapping needs two or more traps per yard to move the needle, and a single trap captures only a fraction of what it attracts. One trap is a gesture. Two is a program.
Your neighbors are already doing this. The DIY version, the "bucket of doom," has become the grassroots move on r/sandiego, with people setting one in the front yard and one in the back. It appears in no county brochure and no UC IPM note, but it is the CDC's own mechanism, reinvented by residents. That makes it an unusually easy ask on a group text.
Kids and pets: no pesticide involved at all. Site it where a toddler or dog cannot get into the water, same as any open bucket. Budget for refills, a fresh sticky card and hay roughly every eight weeks.The Biogents BG-Mosquitaire runs a synthetic human scent lure plus a suction fan. She comes looking for a person, finds the trap, and gets pulled in. There is no pesticide involved at any point, which is the entire reason it belongs above the patio repeller on a California street.
In published field trials the consumer BG-Mosquitaire caught Ae. aegypti at rates not significantly different from the BG-Sentinel, the trap mosquito-control districts and the WHO actually use. Baited with lure and CO2 it out-caught a Mosquito Magnet Patriot by 6.8 times and a SkeeterVac by 11.9 times. The trials ran in Florida, California and Louisiana.
Why this is the swap: it targets host-seeking females, the ones biting you, it runs all day which matters because yours bites in daylight, and a resistance mutation in her sodium channel does nothing against a fan and a scent. Pair it with the AGO trap and you are hitting both halves of her life, the female hunting you and the female laying eggs.
Honest costs: it needs an outdoor outlet, lure cartridges are a recurring spend, and adding CO2 improves catch but adds hassle. It is the most expensive thing on this page. It is also the only outdoor item here whose evidence does not evaporate in a breeze.
No pesticide, nothing to breathe, nothing for a dog or a kid to get into beyond the cord. Site it in shade near where mosquitoes come from, not next to where you sit, since the point is to pull them away from you.I recommended it a version ago. Then Eddie pulled the California reviews and they told a consistent story that the literature backs up, so it has moved down this page. The honest picture:
The evidence for it is real but was collected somewhere else. The strong numbers (80 to 90 percent fewer landings) come from trials run indoors, in the evening, in low wind of 0 to 4 km/h deliberately chosen so the plume would stay put, against populations that are not ours. Your problem is outdoors, in daylight, in a Southern California afternoon breeze, against a V1016I population. Almost none of that transfers.
Three separate things break it here:
Revised verdict: worth having for a still evening on the patio, placed on the ground, started 15 minutes early, as a bonus layer on top of the trap and the fan. Not worth buying as your main defense on this street. If you already clicked buy, keep it, put it on the floor, and set your expectations at "helps on calm nights."
It shreds the carbon dioxide plume she tracks you by, and she struggles above about 2 mph of wind. Combined with repellent, one study measured 74 percent less orientation and 75 percent fewer landings at very modest airflow.
Point it low, at legs, not at faces. That is where she attacks.
First, to settle the zapper question: no, it does not kill them. Six zappers running 10 weeks killed 13,789 insects and only 31 of those were biting flies, mosquitoes included. Zero point two two percent. She does not navigate by ultraviolet light, so a zapper is not baiting her at all, it is baiting moths and beneficial night insects and killing those instead. It is loud, it feels like it is working, and it is doing nothing to your problem.
Here is what the indoor literature actually supports, in order of how much it does for you.
A randomized field trial across 200 houses in Ticul, Yucatan, put a passive metofluthrin emanator (a treated net, no flame, no electricity, no fan, it just releases into ambient air) at one per room, replaced every three weeks. Result: 2.5 times fewer Aedes aegypti total, 2.4 times fewer females, 2.3 times fewer blood-fed females. Landing rates on people fell 80 to 90 percent.
And it worked on a pyrethroid-resistant population, the same resistance California's mosquitoes carry. That matters enormously, because resistance is exactly where barrier spraying underdelivers.
The consumer version is SC Johnson Mosquito Shield: 110 mg transfluthrin, 30 days per unit, fully passive, explicitly designed for indoor rooms (one per wall, four for a normal room), full strength about two hours after you hang it, hung high out of kids' reach. It carries a WHO prequalification safety assessment covering infants, children and pregnant women.
The honest catch: it is built as a global public-health product and is not reliably on US retail shelves. Check, and if you cannot get it, layers 2 through 4 still stack into a real result. Do not substitute an outdoor Thermacell indoors to fake it.
The Biogents BG-Home runs a synthetic human scent (they call it BG-Homescent) plus suction, built specifically for the mosquitoes that come inside and rest in the house, and tuned for Aedes aegypti in particular. It is her own attraction system turned into the trap. Biogents' research platform, the BG-Sentinel, is the gold standard used by mosquito control programs and the WHO.
Straight with you: I could not find independent peer-reviewed efficacy data on the BG-Home model itself. The 88 percent figure the company quotes is residents reporting they noticed fewer mosquitoes, which is perception, not measurement. The underlying technology is first-rate. This specific product is less proven than the AGO bucket.
She rests on the bottom 0 to 20 cm of the wall, about 12 percent of a room's wall area, and the researchers who mapped that called the preference "vulnerable to householder-led vector control." Translation: you can go get her.
Once at dusk, take a flashlight and a handheld vacuum along the baseboards, under beds, behind the toilet, inside closets, under the stairs, behind hanging laundry, and under and behind furniture. Vacuum, do not swat. Do the kids' rooms before bed. Cheapest thing on this page, aimed precisely where the science says she is sitting.
The professional version of the same idea, targeted indoor residual spraying of the lower 1.5 m of walls and under furniture, was tested in a randomized trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine and produced a 24 percent community-level impact. Modest, professional, pesticide-heavy. You get the same targeting logic for free with a vacuum.
Screening is the best-evidence indoor intervention with no chemistry at all: cluster randomized trials in Merida found screened houses had significantly fewer females and fewer blood-fed females inside, sustained about two years. A fan indoors does the same 45 to 60 percent it does outdoors. And a bed canopy over a kid who is getting eaten is close to total protection for the eight hours she is under it, costs about $25, and involves nothing at all.
Never bring an outdoor-labeled repeller inside to solve this. The outdoor-only label is the safety mechanism, not a formality. Indoor spatial products are separately formulated, dosed and tested for indoor air.Almost everything marketed as natural is worthless, which is exactly why the two that are real deserve saying out loud.
That comes from a human landing catch study, the hard kind where a person exposes skin and researchers count bites. Separately, Iowa State's original work found nepetalactone roughly ten times more effective than DEET at repelling: at just 0.1 percent it kept about 75 percent of Aedes aegypti off the treated side of a test tube, where DEET at a comparable dose left 40 to 45 percent still sitting on it. Follow-up Y-tube work confirmed it specifically against your species.
Why it works: it hits TRPA1, an ancient irritant receptor in insects that triggers immediate get-away behavior. Completely different mechanism from DEET. EPA has confirmed catnip essential oil is safe for human use, and studies found no irritation even at 25 percent on skin.
The catch, and it is real: catnip oil is EPA-registered as a repellent and a few registered products exist, but there is no widely available EPA-registered catnip skin repellent on the US market right now. So you are either buying one of the niche products or diluting essential oil yourself, and a DIY dilution has not been through the testing that bottle of picaridin has. Treat it as a genuinely promising natural option, not as the thing you put on your kids before the pool.
USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists published in Scientific Reports that specific coconut-derived free fatty acids (lauric, capric and caprylic acid plus their methyl esters) gave over 90 percent repellency against mosquitoes including Aedes aegypti, and lasted about two weeks on ticks and bed bugs where DEET faded after three days. USDA filed a patent and is working with companies to commercialize it.
Which means you cannot buy it yet. Plain coconut oil from the grocery store is not the same thing and is not what was tested. Worth watching, not worth ordering.
Citronella candles, 20 to 40 percent, barely better than a plain candle. Repellent wristbands, protection does not reach past a few centimeters. Repelling plants in a pot, they only release anything meaningful when you crush the leaves, and the saucer under the pot is a breeding container. Vitamin B1 and garlic pills, no controlled evidence at all.
Natural does not mean automatically safe. Do not put undiluted essential oil on skin, patch-test first, and keep concentrated oils away from small children and away from cats, who are unusually sensitive to many of them.Consumer Reports lab-tested more than 50 repellents for 2026. Ben's 30 wipes ranked first overall, three of the top five were Ben's 30 products, and the fifth was Repel Lemon Eucalyptus. Protection across the field ran from under 2 hours to over 7.
Straight with you: picaridin did not crack their top five. That was four DEET products plus the lemon eucalyptus. But head-to-head protection-time studies put 20 percent picaridin at about 410 minutes against this species, level with 20 percent DEET, and it is gentler, near odorless and will not melt your sunglasses.
So keep both. Picaridin as the daily one your family will actually agree to wear, DEET wipes for bad evenings and the pool bag.
A pyrethroid-resistant Puerto Rico strain also showed reduced behavioral response to DEET, IR3535 and 2-undecanone, with the researchers linking it to reduced olfactory sensitivity riding along with the kdr mutation. So skin repellents are not completely immune here either.
But keep perspective. The effect on topicals is far smaller than the 48-fold hit measured on metofluthrin repellency, and the protection-time studies still show hours, not minutes. This stays in your kit. It just means do not treat a spray as a force field, and stack it with the fan and covered ankles.
Follow the label for children's ages. CDC, EPA and the AAP all say no oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on children under 3.She attacks low and lands on shoes, socks and cuffs before she ever finds skin. Spray the shoes your family actually wears outside, let them dry, forget about it for six weeks. Nothing goes on your body at all.
One honest flag: permethrin is itself a type I pyrethroid, and California bottle bioassays confirmed resistance to permethrin specifically, so the resistance question absolutely applies here. It is not the same situation as the vapor products (this is high-dose contact irritancy on fabric, not a dilute plume in open air, and the fabric holds its dose for weeks), but nobody should sell you this as immune. It is cheap, it targets the exact spot she attacks, and it is worth doing. Just stack it rather than relying on it.
Fabric and footwear only, never skin. Fine around dogs, it is the same class used in their flea products. Dangerous to cats while wet, they cannot metabolize it. Spray and dry away from any cat. Once fully dry it is negligible.Soap moves the needle. A 2023 iScience study tested volunteers before and after washing with four brands. Dove and Simple Truth made some people more attractive to mosquitoes. Native Coconut and Vanilla repelled them. Mosquitoes liked fruit and flower scents, disliked coconut. Small proof-of-concept study, four volunteers, so treat it as a free nudge and not a shield. In season: skip fruity and floral body wash, shampoo and lotion, go coconut.
Never buy the combined sunscreen-plus-bug-spray bottle. CDC recommends against it, because sunscreen needs reapplying far more often than repellent, so you end up re-dosing yourself with repellent you did not need. Correct order is sunscreen first, wait 10 minutes, repellent on top. Some sunscreens lose more than 30 percent of their SPF when mixed with DEET.
And the perfume thing is real, with two asterisks. New Mexico State tested 10 products and found Victoria's Secret Bombshell repelled mosquitoes, matching DEET for the first two hours, then wearing off by four while DEET held. Second asterisk: they doused about half a milliliter on the test hand, far more than anyone wears, and the authors said so. Fun, real, not a substitute for repellent. If you are wearing a fragrance anyway, wear that one.
If you do nothing else this week: a Thermacell where you sit, picaridin by the back door, and one AGO trap in the side yard. About $110 and twenty minutes. You will feel it inside a week.
The offense buys you this summer. This buys you next summer. She only flies 50 to 100 meters, so she was born within a short walk.
She glues her eggs to the damp inside wall just above the waterline, where they survive dry for months and hatch the second they get wet. Tip a bucket and walk away and you did not kill anything, you set the alarm clock. Tip it, then scrub the inside wall.
Bromeliads are the named number-one backyard source in this county, by both the county and local exterminators. Water them from the base only, or take them out. Irrigation micro-pools are the tract-home signature: sprinklers leave bottle-cap puddles everywhere that would normally dry out, except the system refills them every other day. And bamboo stumps, because a cut culm is a water-filled straw.
Then treat the plumbing, not just the containers. This is the step almost nobody does and it produced one of the only clean "bite-free in 45 days" reports out there: Mosquito Bits into French drains, underground downspout tubes, sump lines, driveway drains and dried P-traps, every two weeks. Fairfax County names underground downspout tubes as the number-one place they find eggs and larvae, and a San Diego county inspector ended a whole condo infestation by putting pellets down the drains.
Fill plant saucers with sand or gravel so they physically cannot hold water. That is a permanent fix that deletes a weekly chore forever, and almost nobody has heard it. And use fine mesh, not coarse screen, over rain barrels, drains and any opening, because coarse screen does not stop Aedes.
A bacteria that kills only mosquito, blackfly and fungus-gnat larvae. Bits are granules for saucers and plant centers, Dunks are donuts that last 30 days in anything permanently wet.
Safe around kids, dogs, cats, birds, fish and bees when used per the label.The lake is a red herring. Open water is where Culex lives, the dusk mosquito. The black-and-white daytime one is a container species living inside the built yard. Pointing at the lake is how a family spends a whole summer not fixing the source thirty feet from the back door.
Open whichever one is bugging you.
She does not wander in, she rests indoors between meals. Researchers who mapped where she actually sits found she prefers the strip of wall 0 to 20 cm off the floor, about 12 percent of a room's wall area. That is your ankle bites explained: she launches from ankle height because she lives at ankle height.
It also gives you a target. Under and behind furniture, under beds, behind the toilet, inside closets, under the stairs, behind hanging laundry. Tiny fraction of your house.
The fix is a screen and a door sweep, not a chemical. Cluster randomized trials in Merida, Mexico found screened houses had significantly fewer females and fewer blood-fed females inside, and treated screening held that for about two years. Roughly $30.
A Rockefeller study in Cell (2022) ranked people head to head over three years. The ones mosquitoes swarmed produced significantly more carboxylic acids on their skin, compounds from sebum that skin bacteria turn into your personal body odor.
The part that matters: your ranking stayed the same for three years and did not change with diet or grooming. No food, supplement or vitamin fixes it, and anyone selling one is selling nothing. Soap is the one small exception, and it is in the offense list.
So be practical. The person who gets hunted gets the strongest layer, and treat them as the household's early warning system, because they feel a rebound a week before anyone else.
The pool water is not the problem. Chlorinated circulating water does not breed mosquitoes. The planters, saucers, irrigation boxes, catch basins and trash lids around the deck do.
Before you leave the house: sunscreen, wait ten minutes, then picaridin or a DEET wipe on calves, shins and ankles, not just arms. Not the combined bottle.
Then get it fixed for everyone. A pool deck is common area. One report to the county plus the HOA fixes it for every family who swims there, and the county inspection is what gives the HOA request teeth.
Highest-value call: report a neglected or green pool. One untended pool produces mosquitoes by the tens of thousands, the county acts, and the neighbor relationship never becomes your problem.
Rutgers put lethal traps in over 500 households in one Maryland town. In the neighborhoods that got above 80 percent household coverage, female mosquito captures dropped significantly compared to blocks below that line. The CDC's own figure is 85 percent of houses. Which means a solo yard program is structurally capped, and you should know that going in.
The blueprint that actually worked, worth copying line for line. One guy in Arlington got 20-plus buckets across 12 homes, and the reason it worked is that he removed every barrier to participating:
His result: "Have not been bit this year yet." Someone else in that thread pays their middle-schooler $200 a season to maintain three buckets instead of $700 for a spray service.
Do not ask people to tip their buckets. That is homework and it reads as criticism. Hand them a bucket that is already set up.
California vector control will inspect your property and ask to inspect a neighbor's, but they cannot compel it. One San Diego resident living next to a 200-container hoarder was told outright there was nothing they could do. The escalation that has actually worked for people: neighbor, then landlord, then code enforcement or solid waste, then the fire department if it is a canyon lot (defensible space), then a county housing or health complaint, then the nuisance abatement unit, then local news. One San Diegan got trucks out through "San Diego clean up" after vector control declined.
The complaint-writing tip that worked: hammer the quantity of individual open containers, and mention any dead bird or any green algae water.
Because it is. San Diego County runs no sterile-insect or Wolbachia program. Greater LA does, and is getting about 82 percent fewer female mosquitoes in its release areas. Orange County releases 50,000 to 200,000 sterilized males a week. The San Gabriel Valley launched a Wolbachia program in July 2026. San Bernardino's district ran an In2Care pilot and got 43 percent fewer eggs at six weeks.
San Diego does real work (about 10 Aedes traps set per week in season, monthly helicopter larvicide over 1,400 acres and 52 waterways, over 94 percent of it organic-listed bacterial larvicide, free inspections and mosquitofish, and door-to-door response after a local case). But there is no area-wide offense here, which means the parcel-level work on this page is not us being obsessive. It is the only offense our zip code has.
And it started here. Ae. aegypti was first found in the county in South County in 2014. Chula Vista is ground zero.
Dog owners: a third invasive, Aedes notoscriptus, has been in the county since 2018 and vectors dog heartworm. Worth one sentence to your vet about prophylaxis, not worth worrying about beyond that.
For the bites you already have: the most upvoted local tip appears in no vector-control material anywhere. Concentrated heat right after a bite, the hottest tolerable shower water on the ankles, or a dedicated thermal bite pen, denatures the saliva proteins and stops the itch. That is bite relief, not control, which is exactly why no agency publishes it. If you have a kid covered in bites, it is the thing they actually want.
That last line is the whole game. Dropping means keep going. Flat after three weeks means a nursery is still open and you walk the yard again. Rising means something new appeared, a trap lapsed, or it is coming from next door.

Nobody eradicates this species from a yard permanently, and anyone saying otherwise is selling something. She can fly in from 100 meters the week after you finish. That is physics, not failure.
What this does instead: kills the egg-laying females on your property, deletes the nurseries, and stacks two or three cheap jams on the way she finds you. That is a knockdown you feel at dinner, and it holds as long as the weekly ten minutes keeps happening.
It gets dramatically better if the block does it together. That 80 percent number only appeared when about 85 percent of homes had traps. She flies 50 to 150 meters, so our yards are one shared problem. A street where most families keep one cheap bucket in the side yard is a genuinely different street.
